Pause and Prepare

Recently, a student was sharing that when they are coaching a fellow believer, they feel they are on Holy Ground. We absolutely agree! As a Christian Life Coach, when people bare their lives to you, you are most definitely on Holy Ground.

So many times, as Christian coaches, we are thinking about our coaching skills, our tools, our handouts, and other ways we can help our client.

But if we jump ahead of the Lord, we interrupt Holy terrain.

In other words, we have spoiled a God-blessed opportunity.

Yes, it’s important that we train and practice our Christian Coaching skills. Yes, it’s important that we grow comfortable using effective tools and handouts for our clients. Yes, it’s important that we help our clients set goals and action steps. Yes, it’s important that we provide accountability.

But we aren’t a Christian Coach in name only. We don’t ever want to get in the way of what the Lord wants to accomplish in our client’s life.

So how do we make sure that doesn’t happen?

We invite the Lord into every coaching session. As Christian Coaches, we need the help of the Holy Spirit, with every client at every session.

As we invite the Lord into our coaching sessions, His Healing Presence goes to work in our client. Being in the presence of God is not an ordinary thing!

It is an unbelievable opportunity to experience our Holy God. And we want to intentionally prepare for this encounter with God and our clients.

So how do we do that? How do we prepare for every coaching session so we don’t spoil a God-blessed opportunity?

We pause and prepare.

Here are 5 ways to get our hearts ready before a coaching session:

  1. Go to the Lord – confess any sin, forgive others, surrender to the Lordship of Jesus and invite the Holy Spirit to fill you.
  2. Spend time worshipping the Lord – put on some favorite worship songs and praise Him for His goodness. Praise Him in advance for what He’s going to do in that upcoming session.
  3. Read and reflect on God’s Word – let the wisdom of His Word fill you and prepare you.
  4. Center ourselves on God before and during the session. As a coach, I want to let go of any distractions, “to do” lists or worries and be fully present with the Lord.
  5. Pray with your client – invite the Holy Spirit to work throughout the session, bringing healing and awareness.

You can have the best coaching tool, or powerful handout, or meaningful journal entry starter, or insightful question, but if you don’t pause and prepare, inviting the Lord to not just be present in the session, but actually lead and guide the session, then we are going to spoil that God-blessed opportunity.

When we pause and prepare for our client and upcoming session, we allow the presence of God to flow through us and surround our client in a space that is ready and waiting for the Holy Spirit to intervene and bring change.
